North Falmouth Cemetery 1804 - Present Location: 153 Old Main Road, North Falmouth, behind North Falmouth Congregational Church Earlier readings of inscriptions: · 1968-1970 by William M. Dunkle The tree-lined road leading to the back of the North Falmouth Congregational Church opens onto the burying ground which is surrounded by a white picket fence, with granite posts and a wrought-iron entry gate. Carvings of traditional motifs and sentimental verses are found on gravestones of slate, granite, and marble. The earliest burials date from 1804, many years before John Nye of North Falmouth sold, on 6 December 1827, for $7.50, a 60-rod fenced-in lot of land with access road for a burying ground to nineteen North Falmouth men. Purchasers included fourteen members of the Nye family, three members of the Crowell family, and one member of each the Eldred and Ellis families. Between 1804 and the 1827 sale of the land, seventeen internments took place there. Before the North Falmouth Congregational Church was built on Old Main Road in 1832, there were six additional internments of North Falmouth residents. The earliest burials were memorials to North Falmouth sea captains Reuben Nye (son of land owner John Nye) and Joshua Crowell who both died at sea on October 9, 1804. Twenty-four additional sea captains were buried in the cemetery, as well as several North Falmouth Revolutionary War veterans. More than 1,000 burials have taken place between 1804 and the present.
